If you don't know who your content website's competitors are, head over to the Organic Research Competitors report and it will tell you based on commonly used keywords, which you should consider a competitor.

Once you find your competitor, go to the domain Organic Positions report. Here you can see what their best performing keywords are. You can even see which keywords are driving the most traffic to their website by sorting them by Traffic%.

Now analyze these two things from the report:

  • Do any of these keywords relate to your website?

  • And check for the keywords in this report that you are not currently ranking for.

Find a keyword that best suits your website. Click the keyword that you want to bringKeyword Summary report.

It tells you everything you need to know about the keyword, including the average monthly search volume and the number of results displayed for the keyword. So you've narrowed your results down to a particular keyword, now you can try to break it down further.

Phrase search and related keyword reports will help you find more specific ideas. The Related Keywords report lists related keywords to the keyword you were looking for. It also displays keywords that are lower in search volume and more in your target range.

2. Explore long tail keywords

By knowing your competitors' high traffic keywords, you can increase the search engine traffic to your blog than your competitors and create great content around those keywords.

Enter a seed keyword related to your niche in the SEMrush search box. Here I fill in 'SEO tips'.

seo overview

The screenshot above shows an overview of this keyword. It provides the trending data for this keyword, the organic and paid search options, as well as keyword and related keyword data.

You can view the full report for a deeper dive into it. In the full report, you can identify relevant and important search volume keywords. One way to do keyword research is to target a keyword with search volumes.

The Phrase Match Report Allows you to discover the Keyword Difficulty, Suggested CPC (in USD), Competitive Density (PPC), Number of Results (in Google), and Trend for this specific keyword.

Remember that keyword research is all about looking at the search volume and difficulty of a particular phrase. If you don't find a search volume for a particular keyword, try targeting multiple phrases in one article.

During the trial period, SEMrush only gives you a limited number of keyword ideas.

3. Solve a common problem

SEMrush helps you find new content ideas and is also high in the SERPs. Here are the few things you need to do for this.

  • Choose your competitor: List all the top blogs in your niche in a spreadsheet. Now enter each in the SEMrush search bar. Go to the navigation on the left and choose 'Organic Research' from the 'Domain Analytics' drop-down list.

  • Apply filters: To analyze your competitor's data, you need to apply a filter. After applying the filter, you can now see all of your competitor's ranking keywords. From each filter you can understand every keyword phrase and how realistic your chances of ranking for it are.

  • Sort it: Usually SEMrush sorts the results by traffic that displays branding terms at the top. Look at SEMrush's Keyword Difficulty, if you don't see any results, increase to <90.

  • Find the opportunity: Discover a long tail search that is on the first page and has more searches per month.

So now you have identified a question. Try these three to make sure you're one step ahead of your competitor.

  1. Answer the question.

  2. Create valuable and relevant content.

  3. Keep metadata and page titles relevant to the search.

Turning those common problems into blog post topics that provide solutions will not only help the readers, but also increase the authority of your blog.
