  1. Find out the number of words you've used on your page

  2. Find out how often a primary keyword is used on the page

  3. Divide the number of keywords used by the total number of word counts

  4. Multiply it by 100 to know the keyword density.

So basically it was calculated by taking both the number of keywords and the total number of words in an article and then multiplying it by 100.

Let's take an example so you can understand it better.

If you have 2000 words on a page and have used your primary keyword 10 times, here's how to calculate the density of your keywords.

10/2000 = 0.005

Now you have to multiply it by 100

0.005 * 100 = 0.5

So your keyword density is 0.5. You can calculate your density based on the number of times a keyword combination is used by taking the page's total number of words.

But there is one more thing to look out for. According to many people, the density of 0.5 is really very low. You can't rank higher in the search results for your keywords with such a low density, right?

Wrong.

If you use 2 or 3 word phrases (such as long tail keywords) as your target keywords, the keyword density doesn't really matter. Long tail keywords always have a great advantage in getting more traffic from search engines because they have a combination of multiple keywords.

No.

If you look at everything from a search engine point of view, a high keyword density (like over 3%) is a STRONG indicator of search engine spam. It can seriously affect your overall rank for that specific page.
