Step 2: Discover Your Competitor's Highest Performing Keywords
In this step, our only goal is to find the keywords that drive the most traffic to competitor your search engine some of them to increase the search traffic to your own sites. Ready? Let's talk about it.
Let's take Problogger.net's example again for finding the most important keywords.
Quick note: To find the best performing keywords of a website or blog, you can use 'Domain overview' and click on Show full report under 'Top organic keywords' or you can also use the 'Keyword overview' feature on SEMrush so you can find easily get all the details about their keywords.
Here's what SEMrush shows for Problogger.net's best keywords.
Note that over 23,000 keywords send traffic from Google to Problogger.net (which is definitely a HUGE authority blog), along with the search volume for each keyword.
If you click the View Full Report button, you will see even more keywords.

3. You can also clearly find the following information using the Keyword Overview feature on SEMrush.
Search volume for each keyword
Ranks for each keyword
Keyword density
Search traffic density for each keyword
Cost required to rank for that keyword
CPC information
This information is HUGE. This keyword information is enough to find out the top performing keywords from your competitors to crush them in search engine results.
Not only that, it will also show you which of their keywords are in the top 3, top 4 to 10 etc. This information can be helpful for you to choose those keywords that will send your competitor more search engine visitors.
Pro Tip: Make sure to list 50 to 100 really good (potential and low search volumes) keywords from each of your competitors by implementing this step. That means that if you perform keyword analysis even for 5 of your competitors, you will have a huge list of about 300 profitable keywords in your own database. That's enough to come up with ideas for your own sites for a year to drive traffic.
Step 3: Target Your Competitor's Backlink Resources Of your competitor
Now that you have a list's best organic keywords, now is the time to find out where the backlinks are coming from.
Why? Why perform a backlink analysis of your competitor's?
The simple reason is: Google gives TOP priority to backlinks. If your blog or website has a lot of backlinks from different sources, Google thinks you have an authority site and increases your ranking, domain authority, search traffic etc. So the site with more links usually gets a better ranking. Therefore, backlink analysis is a must if you want to legally steal your competitor's search traffic.
Let's see how you can use SEMrush to perform backlink analysis. In the "Backlinks" tab under the "Domain Analysis" function, click SEMrush to find out your competitor's backlinks.
It has 630,000+ backlinks in total. Among them, 19% are dofollow and the rest are non-follow. There's no point in finding sources of nofollow links, so we'll focus on where the dofollow links come from.
The screenshot above shows the dofollow link sources for Problogger. You can find out all their backlink resources by following this step.
You can also know the anchor text for each link, so you have a good idea of what kind of content attracts more dofollow links. It can be helpful to come up with a solid link building strategy for the content of your own site.

4. What to do if you have found your competitor's backlink resources?
Choose some of those sources, create content around those topics, and tell those bloggers that you have created even better content around those topics. This is also known as the Skyscraper technique.
That way, your content will get dofollow links from multiple sources as soon as you publish. This can give you a big impact on your search rankings and so you can boost your search traffic very quickly.
Step 4: Create unique and detailed content after conducting a competitive analysis
In Steps 2 and 3, we came up with two important things: the best organic keywords and backlink sources from your competitor's.
To truly legally steal your competitor's search traffic, one last thing you need to do is create premium and detailed content. This is what you can do after implementing steps 2 and 3 in this guide.
Use your competitors' keyword data to come up with blog post ideas.
Spend quality time researching those topics.
Spend extra time writing detailed blog posts (more than 2,000 words because they rank really well in search engines).
Reach out to those bloggers who have already linked to your competitors' resources and let them know you've published even better content. Even if most of them don't link to your content, you're still getting search traffic to your sites because you're creating content that's already proven to go viral on Google.
Yes, this step alone (creating detailed and unique content) takes time and serious effort. But that's what SEO optimization is all about. Once you take care of your content that is both search engine and easy to use, you can reap the best rewards in terms of traffic and sales.
That said, here are some effective tips for creating in-depth content that scores very well in search engines.
Always do a thorough research on the top 10 results for your targeted keywords. Find out how they score well on Google and also note any points missing on those pages. That way, it becomes easy for you to write in-depth content on almost every point under the sun related to your topic.
When creating content, also make sure to link to your own articles. Internal links play a major role in SEO.
Use a lot of screenshots. Otherwise, reading a detailed article (like this post) can be difficult for your readers. Use the correct titles and meta description for your posts for better ranking.
Use SEMrush wisely. Use related keywords and optimize them in your titles, subheadings and images to rank higher in Google.
All in all , SEMrush helps you stop guessing what your visitors want and gives you detailed information about what REALLY works.
